Longhorns RB Savion Red Out A Couple Weeks With Shoulder Injury

The Texas Longhorns are down a running back in what is otherwise a deep room.
In this story:

Head coach Steve Sarkisian announced Friday that ahead of the Texas Longhorns' scrimmage Saturday, running back Savion Red sustained a sprained shoulder in camp that will hold him for a couple weeks.

The Longhorns have depth at the running back position in Jonathon Brooks, Jaydon Blue, CJ Baxter and Keilan Robinson that will be able to carry the load if the injury carries over into the season opener against Rice Sept. 2. Red is a converted wide receiver, who began training as a running back this offseason.

In nine games, Red caught six passes for 34 yards — 20 of which came on two receptions against Kansas State Nov. 5, 2022.

Sarkisian said Texas has had more physical practices with contact installed than in years past due to the comfortability he and the coaching staff has with the depth of the roster.

Red is the second player to be significantly injured in camp as defensive lineman Sydir Mitchell had an MRI for a leg injury, but Sarkisian said for how physical the practices are, players' ailments aren't the norm.

"We're going 1s, 2s and 3s and sometimes the 3 might be a better player athletically than the 1, but the 1's knowledge base is so strong but the drop off isn't so significant," Sarkisian said. "We've had a few more live periods than we probably normally would have, but what's unique is oddly enough we've had less injuries. So, knock on wood, it's been really positive."
