Former Longhorns LB DeMarvion Overshown Out For Year With Torn ACL
DeMarvion Overshown has always preached his ability to overcome any obstacle.
He'll have to overcome a significant one following Saturday's misfortunes.
According to reports, Overshown, a former Texas Longhorns and current Dallas Cowboys linebacker, suffered a torn ACL during Saturday's preseason matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. He officially will miss the entire 2023 season.
Drafted 90th overall, Overshown was expected to compete for the No. 3 linebacker spot while carving out a role on special teams. During Saturday's matchup at Lumen Field, the former Longhorn suffered the injury while making an open-field tackle in the first quarter.
Overshown was able to walk off the field under his own pressure, but following further medical evaluation, was carted to the locker room for more testing.
"He's had an incredible camp," coach Mike McCarthy said after the 22-14 loss to the Seahawks. "Seems like we talked about him every other day. I hope he's OK."
Dallas fell in love with Overshown's upside, primarily due to his experience and versatility. A five-year contributor on the Forty Acres, Overshown took reps at linebacker, pass rusher and safety, mostly starting as the Longhorns' middle backer and defensive captain.
In five seasons with the Longhorns, Overshown registered 249 tackles, 30.5 tackles for loss, nine sacks, 17 pass breakups and three interceptions. He also garnered first-team All-Big 12 status his senior season after recording career-highs in tackles (98) and tackles for loss (10.0)
Players in the Cowboys locker room said postgame that Overshown's leadership and passion that made him a staple for the Longhorns was evident during training camp.
Overshown was one of three Cowboys injured during Saturday's game. Undrafted tight end John Stephens also suffered a torn ACL after being clipped on the knee by a Seattle defender and will miss the remainder of the season. Offensive tackle Matt Waletzko sustained a right shoulder injury but is expected to be day-to-day entering the final week of the NFL preseason.
