Texas Longhorns 'Obvious' Title Contender, Says Joel Klatt
The Texas Longhorns have been on what feels like a never-ending quest to return to prominence.
We all grew up watching it and remembering it, but the new age of college football players and fans see it as a distant memory. Well, luckily for Texas fans and the fans that weren't able to witness the Vince Young and Colt McCoy era, the Longhorns seem to finally be on track to return to national contention.
They currently rank as the No. 3 team in the country which is their first time gracing the top-five since 2010. The buzz around the Longhorns isn't just coming from Austin as has it in years past, as Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt recently declared Texas a title contender on his show The Joel Klatt Show.
"Texas is an obvious one for me, and it's not because of what their quarterback did," said Klatt. "It's actually not just because of the result against Alabama although that helps, it's not just because of Steve Sarkisian and the way that he calls plays although that helps."
"It's not just Xavier Worthy and some of the skill position players on the outside although that helps", said Klatt. "Do you know why Texas is real? Do you know why they're an obvious choice to go above the line [championship level]? It's because they are real at the line of scrimmage, their defense is consistent, and it's consistently good. "
Klatt also went as far as to say that this team reminds him of Texas in their heyday.
"This to me reminds me a lot more of the 2004 and 2005 Texas team than it does what we've seen for the last decade or even with Colt McCoy."
The Longhorns have two major tests in the coming weeks, as they host No. 24 Kansas this weekend, and will head to Dallas to take on No. 14 Oklahoma in the Allstate Red River Rivalry. If they are able to survive these two weekends unscathed, the path to the Big 12 title game and the playoff will be as clear as day for them.
