UCLA Head Coach Strategically Keeping Starting QB1 Announcement Under Wraps

Kelly loves a good secret

We're 8 days away from the start of the 2023 season, Bruin fans. The excitement is at an all-time high as the team gears up for their final season as members of the Pac-12 Conference.

Even though we are such a short time away from the first game of the season, head coach Chip Kelly is still adamant about not announcing the QB1 just yet. It's pretty odd for a team with a lot riding for them, but that's precisely how Kelly wants to operate. He said it himself to Bruins insider Gavin Carlson.

Kelly said he will name a starter next week, and he's doing it on purpose, similar to how he did it back in 2018, his first season at the helm at UCLA.

In 2018, Kelly went with graduate transfer Wilton Speight in the first game, but after a back injury, true freshman Dorian Thompson-Robinson stepped in, and the rest is history.

Will Kelly go with the true freshman this time, or will he go with the veteran like junior transfer Ethan Garbers?

I'm sure Kelly and the staff have had an idea of who they want to start for a while, but it's clear Kelly loves the speculation, and he'll keep us waiting for one more week.

No matter who it is, they'll have a lot to prove and show they can lead the way in a season that will be a must-see.
