USC Football News: Updated Odds Place Trojans Among The Best in CFP Chances
As we get closer to the college football season, the odds to win the College Football Playoff have started to come out. Notably, we see some of the usuals towards the top in Georgia and Alabama, but after the two SEC powerhouses, we see some interesting teams. Ohio State, LSU, and Michigan round out the top five, but there is one clear team that seems to be missing from the equation.
That would be the USC Trojans. After almost reaching the Playoff last season, it seems that while USC does have one of the better odds, they are still being looked down upon. According to odds released by BetMGM, USC has the sixth-best odds at +1400 to win it all next season. To me, that seems low.
This will be the final season for USC in the Pac-12 before they move over to the Big-10, so they should look to take advantage of the schedule this season. They return reigning Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams, and he should continue where he left off last season. In his first season with the Trojans, Williams was simply special. He threw for 4,537 yards and 42 touchdowns while only throwing five interceptions. Williams tore up the Pac-12 defenses and made it look east on the way to winning the highest honor in the sport.
If he has another strong season, he will lock in to be the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, so there is motivation other than just helping USC succeed.
Leading the charge is Lincoln Riley, who is known for being one of the best offensive minds in the game. He helped bring USC back from the brink last season, and now the Trojans mean business again.
The biggest weakness for the Trojans last season was their defense, but the team addressed some of the holes this summer. They won’t be a shutdown-style defense like you’d see at a school like Georgia, but they should be able to hold serve.
This is the best chance that the Trojans will have to win a National Championship in a long time, and maybe they can send themselves off from the Pac-12 with a championship.
