Virginia Beginning to Fill Out Non-Conference Schedule for 2023-2024 Season
Virginia is beginning to fill out its non-conference schedule for the 2023-2024 men's basketball season. UVA has reportedly scheduled a game against Texas Southern for Thursday, November 16th at John Paul Jones Arena, according to a report from Rocco Miller.
This would be the first ever meeting between the Cavaliers and Tigers, who have made each of the last three NCAA Tournaments and have seven NCAA Tournament appearances in the last ten years. Last season, Texas Southern made an incredible run as the lowest seed in the 2023 Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament and won its third-straight SWAC Tournament Championship.
With Texas Southern on the schedule, seven of Virginia's non-conference games have been set for the 2023-2024 season. UVA will host Texas Southern and Morgan State at John Paul Jones Arena and the Cavaliers will play at Memphis as the first part of a home-and-home series with the Tigers.
It was also reported back in February that Virginia will play a neutral-site non-conference game against Florida next season. On November 10th, UVA will face Florida and Virginia Tech will play South Carolina in an ACC-SEC doubleheader at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte. Additionally, the Cavaliers will face another SEC team in non-conference play next season as part of the inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge, which is set to replace the ACC/Big Ten Challenge next season.
Virginia is also slated to play in the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Fort Myers Tip-Off tournament from November 20-22 at Suncoast Credit Union Arena in Fort Myers, Florida. UVA is joined by West Virginia, SMU, and Wisconsin in the four-team Beach Division field for the Fort Myers Tip-Off. Though the matchups have not been announced, the Cavaliers is guaranteed to play two out of those three teams.
In summary, here's what we know about the non-conference slate for the 2023-2024 Virginia men's basketball season so far:
November 10th: Virginia vs. Florida [Charlotte, NC]
November 16th: Virginia vs. Texas Southern
November 20th: Virginia vs. SMU/Wisconsin/West Virginia [Fort Myers, FL]
November 22th: Virginia vs. SMU/Wisconsin/West Virginia [Fort Myers, FL]
December 27th: Virginia vs. Morgan State
TBA: Virginia at Memphis
TBA: Virginia vs. TBD SEC opponent [ACC/SEC Challenge]
UVA is expected to add at least three more non-conference opponents to its 2023-2024 schedule.
