Chicago Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson wished his wife Mallory Pugh Swanson a happy Valentine's Day on his Instagram account last week.

Dansby's caption reads, "To my beautiful wife. Thank you for always being you, living a Jesus centered life, and inspiring me to be the best husband I can be. Forever my valentine. I love you! Happy Valentine’s Day".

Dansby married Mallory in December, after five years together. One week after their wedding, Dansby signed a seven-year, $177 million free agent contract with the Cubs.

Mallory plays for Chicago's professional women's soccer team, the Red Stars. She is also a member of the US Women's National Team.

Dansby joins a Cubs team hungry to improve upon a forgettable 74-win season. In addition to Dansby, the Cubs signed free agents Jameson Taillon, Cody Bellinger, Eric Hosmer, Trey Mancini, Brad Boxberger, Michael Fulmer and Tucker Barnhart.

Swanson will take over at shortstop, with Nico Hoerner moving to second base. With Hoerner returning to the position he played primarily before the Cubs traded Javier Baez, Nick Madrigal has been taking reps this offseason at third base. He is expected split time at the hot corner with Patrick Wisdom to open the season.

Having Swanson and Hoerner up the middle could be among the best defensive middle infields in baseball. Having quality defensive infielders will be of greater importance in 2023 and beyond, as Major League Baseball has put a restriction on defensive shifts.

The Cubs will play their first spring training game Sat., Feb. 25.
