Houston Astros GM Wants to Make Altuve, Bregman 'Astros for Life'
Houston Astros general manager Dana Brown wants to make two-time World Series champion infielders Alex Bregman and Jose Altuve 'Astros for life,' USA Today's Bob Nightengale reports.
Brown is working on extensions with the pair of stars. Altuve, 32, is under contract through 2024. Bregman, 28, is also currently scheduled to hit free agency upon the conclusion of the 2024 MLB season.
Since calling up Bregman in 2016, the Astros have appeared in six straight American League Championship Series, won five American League West division titles and two World Series championships.
Bregman has appeared in two All-Star Games and finished top-5 in American League MVP voting twice, including a second-place finish behind Mike Trout in 2019.
Altuve is an eight-time All-Star, six-time Silver Slugger and three-time batting champion. In 2017, he took home AL MVP honors.
Dana Brown was named the Astros GM in January, after James Click suddenly departed from the organization, just days after the Astros won their second World Series title in franchise history. Brown previously served as the vice president of scouting for the Atlanta Braves from 2019 through 2022.
The Astros are coming off a 106-win season. The club beefed up its lineup, signing 2020 AL MVP Jose Abreu to a three-year contract, and re-signing outfielder Michael Brantley to a one-year, $12 million deal. The club said goodbye to 2022 AL Cy Young Justin Verlander, but still has a very strong pitching rotation that includes Lance McCullers Jr., Framber Valdez and Cristian Javier.
The Astros will play their first spring training game Saturday, hosting the New York Mets in West Palm Beach, Florida.
