The New York Yankees are getting a big piece of their roster back this weekend, as burly right-hander Luis Severino will make his season debut on Sunday against the Cincinnati Reds.

He had been out with a lat strain that was suffered in spring training.

Bryan Hoch of MLB.com tweeted it out on Wednesday:

Luis Severino will start for the #Yankees on Sunday at Cincinnati, Aaron Boone said.

It's interesting to note that that game is 11:35 a.m. as it's part of the early Sunday package for Major League Baseball. We had heard and mentioned this is a possibility on Tuesday.

Severino's return comes as a welcome development for a Yankees rotation that hasn't gotten any starts this year out of Carlos Rodon or Frankie Montas, both of who are out with injuries.

They also just recently had Domingo German get ejected for "sticky stuff" on Tuesday and he faces a 10-game suspension, so Severino helping cover for him is nice for Aaron Boone as well.

For his career, Severino is 50-29 with a 3.39 ERA. He made the American League All-Star team in both 2017 and 2018. He's dealt with injuries frequently in his career. He made just three starts in 2019, missed all of 2020, made four appearances in 2021 and started just 19 games in 2022.

The Yankees are wrapping up a series in Toronto on Wednesday and Thursday before going to Cincinnati for the Reds series, which begins Friday at 6:40 p.m. ET.

New York is currently 25-19 and in fourth place in the highly-competitive American League East. Tampa Bay is in first, followed by Baltimore, Toronto, New York and Boston.
