UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling is set to defend his title against Sean O’Malley at UFC 292 on August 19, but a bigger fight looms in the distance.

Many fans, and even Sterling himself, believe that he will move up to featherweight in the future, which would set the stage for a super-fight with the current champion Alexander Volkanovski.

In terms of Sterling's chances against Volkanovski, former UFC champion Matt Serra believes that he has all the tools necessary to cause an upset.

Serra appeared on the May 30 episode of "The Schaub Show," claiming that Sterling's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) would be a problem for Volkanovski:

“Aljamain with his arms, they’re wiry, I believe if he doesn’t get the neck, he’ll break the jaw. If he get’s [Volkanovski’s] back, he’s finishing.”

“Funk Master” is known for his grappling and would represent a challenge even after moving up a weight class. Serra is also one of Sterling’s coaches, so it’s no surprise that he supports his student this much.

“That’s a winnable fight. No disrespect, I like Volkanovski a lot.”

Sterling has eight career submission victories, but Volkanovski would easily be his toughest opponent yet. "The Great" also has a fight scheduled against Yair Rodriguez at UFC 290 in October, so the title could change hands before a matchup materializes.

Volkanovski has never been submitted in 27 professional fights, so it would provide a unique challenge for Sterling, who is known for his tremendous back-control and smothering grappling.

This is a fight that the UFC matchmakers would love to make. Volkanovski has also shown the willingness to take on new challenges after recently moving up to lightweight to take on Islam Makhachev.

Will Aljamain Sterling Move up to Featherweight?

Sterling has been great at bantamweight, but doesn’t want to fight his friend and training partner Merab Dvalishvili. It is very possible that he moves up to let his friend have a run in that division.

In an interview with "InsideFighting" on April 11, Sterling suggested that he'd be moving up in weight class with "one or two" more fights at bantamweight:

"One [or] two. I think two [more fights at bantamweight] at the most .... and then It'll be up to featherweight and we'll see how I do with these guys over there."

Volkanovski and Sterling both have important fights to focus on before entertaining the idea of this dream matchup. Should they emerge victorious, it appears that these two champions might be heading towards an epic clash.
