2022-23 NBA Awards Media Poll: Sixth Man of the Year
Over the last few weeks, the NBA awards have been a hot topic of discussion around the NBA world.
The three finalists for each award were announced on Friday, April 14, but Fastbreak on FanNation has collected data from NBA media members around the country covering both the league at-large and individual teams.
These media members were asked to vote on their Top-3 for Sixth Man of the Year this season with the voting process working as follows:
- 5 points for every first-place vote
- 3 points for every second-place vote
- 1 points for every third-place vote
Below are the results from the voting that took place for the 2022-23 NBA Sixth Man of the Year award at the conclusion of the regular season:
Media Members Pick To Win 2022-23 NBA Sixth Man of the Year:
Malcolm Brogdon - Boston Celtics
In his first season with the Boston Celtics, Malcolm Brogdon has fully embraced going from a starter to being his team’s “sixth man,” which has put the Celtics in an even better position to win a title than they were in a season ago.
Brogdon came off the bench in all 67 games he played in this season, averaging 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game while shooting 48.4 percent from the floor and 44.4 percent from three-point range. The Celtics guard received 19 total votes for Sixth Man of the Year seen above, 14 of which were first-place votes and he totaled 83 out of 100 possible points.
Very few guys in the NBA are willing to change their role from being “the guy” for their team to coming off the bench and still contributing at a high-level, but this is exactly what Brogdon did this season.
“Malcolm, any given night, he can come out and be one of the best players on the floor,” Celtics' Jaylen Brown said recently when asked about Brogdon’s contributions. “His decision-making, his poise, his athleticism - Malcolm is definitely a game-changer for us being on the ball or off. He finds ways to make an effect on the game and, games like today, where you don't pay attention to him, he'll light you up. That's super key.”
Malcolm Brogdon is very deserving of this season’s Sixth Man of the Year award and was one of the three finalists named for the award along with New York Knicks guard Immanuel Quickley and Milwaukee Bucks big man Bobby Portis.
Quickly ended up finishing second in the vote behind Brogdon, receiving five total first-place votes and receiving 60 of 100 total points. The Knicks needed someone to step up from their bench unit this season and it was Quickley, who averaged 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game in 81 games this season, 60 of which he came off the bench in.
Making up ground on Brogdon in the final month of the regular season, Immanuel Quickley has definitely made a late push for Sixth Man of the Year and that will be reflected in the actual vote that is released by the league soon.
As for Bobby Portis, he finished fourth in the vote, receiving just one second-place vote and six third-place votes. Sacramento Kings guard Malik Monk actually finished ahead of Portis in the poll, receiving one extra third-place vote.
New Orleans Pelicans forward Larry Nance Jr. and Los Angeles Clippers guard Norman Powell were the only other players to receive at least two votes, as Clippers guard Russell Westbrook and Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves each received one third-place vote.
