British GP Results: McLaren Success As Team Celebrates Podium Finish At Silverstone
Max Verstappen crossed the line to win the British Grand Prix, followed by Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton who will be joining the Red Bull driver in second and third place on the podium, respectively.
Max Verstappen started from pole position followed by Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Norris had a fantastic start taking the lead from Verstappen to lead the race for the opening lap. As DRS was enabled, Verstappen took the lead back from the McLaren driver and began to extend his lead.
Esteban Ocon unfortunately had to retire from the race early on after he encountered a hydraulics issue with his Alpine A523.
Twenty-one laps into the race has Verstappen leading with Norris 4.727 seconds behind him. Piastri is 2.458 seconds behind his McLaren teammate and the gap behind the top three is over 5 seconds to George Russell.
On lap 33, Kevin Magnussen's Haas ground to a halt on the track with a power unit failure, leaving his car erupting in flames. Thankfully the driver was fine and walked away from the car quickly. The safety car gave the other drivers the opportunity for a pit stop, so when the racing resumed Max Verstappen lead on soft tyres followed by Lando Norris on hard tyres and Lewis Hamilton on softs.
We had some fantastic battles when the racing resumed between Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton. With ten laps to go, Verstappen explained to his Red Bull team that the soft tyres didn't feel good, although he continued to extend his lead.
Initially, there was some concern with McLaren choosing the hard tyres for the safety car restart, however, the MCL60's were able to run incredibly well on the hard compound.
Pierre Gasly unfortunately had to retire with under ten laps to go after sustaining damage from a small collision with Lance Stroll. This meant a double DNF for the Alpine team. Stroll was later handed a five second penalty for this contact.
