F1 News: Ferrari Handed Huge 2024 Target By Ex-Formula One Team Boss - "For The Sake Of All Italians"

Former Renault boss Flavio Briatore claims Ferrari should be aiming for a podium in all 24 races in 2024.

Flavio Briatore, the ex-head of Renault, has set out a bold goal for Ferrari in 2024 stating the Maranello-based squad should be securing podium positions in "every race".

Key Takeaways:

  • Ferrari's 2023 Season Overview: Ferrari showed promise with Carlos Sainz’s win at the Singapore Grand Prix and multiple pole positions. However, their overall season was marred by inconsistency, leading to a third-place finish in the Constructors' Championship behind Mercedes.
  • Briatore's Analysis and Recommendations: With a wealth of experience in F1, Briatore has observed a significant performance gap for Ferrari between their qualifying rounds and actual races. He asserts that Ferrari needs to aim for podium finishes in each 2024 race.
  • Urging for Enhanced F1 Competition: Amid Max Verstappen's dominant streak in the previous season, there is a widespread call for more competitive racing in 2024, echoing sentiments from Briatore.

Ferrari's 2023 season, the first under Fred Vasseur's direction, had its highs with Carlos Sainz's victory in Singapore and seven pole positions set by Sainz and teammate Charles Leclerc. Yet, the team couldn't maintain a consistent performance, notably struggling in race conditions compared to their qualifying speed.

Reflecting on Ferrari's year, Flavio Briatore offered a pointed critique at the Caschi d’Oro gala. He said:

“Their World Championship was like a chiaroscuro.

“There were races where they were competitive in qualifying, with much less fuel, then not as competitive in the race afterwards."

He continued, outlining his vision for Ferrari's future:

“We have to hope there will be an improvement this winter if they are to be more competitive. For the sake of all Italians and for the sport I hope that Ferrari can do better, even though winning the World Championship could be tough.

“Ferrari should be aiming at a podium at least in every race. Let’s hope a Frenchman helps Ferrari win, like I helped the French.”

With Verstappen's record-breaking 19 victories in 2023, Briatore emphasised the need for increased rivalry in the upcoming season.

“I hope there will be a bit more antagonism next year, otherwise it won’t be much fun. People need to see a proper fight for the title, not such strong domination.”
