F1 News: Lewis Hamilton Gets Emotional Over Hungarian GP Pole Position - "Feels Like The First Time"
Lewis Hamilton has reflected on getting his first pole position since the 2021 Saudi Arabian GP.
In an exciting qualifying session at the Hungaroring, Lewis Hamilton bagged his 104th career pole position.
Joining Hamilton at the front of the grid tomorrow are Max Verstappen and Lando Norris who will be starting from second and third, respectively.
During his post-race interview with Sky Sports F1 reporter Danica Patrick, an emotional Hamilton explained:
"It's been a crazy year and a half so I've lost my voice from shouting so much in the car. It's amazing, I feel so grateful to be up here because the team have worked so hard. We've been pushing so hard over this time to finally get a pole. It feels like the first time so a big, big thanks to the crowd here.
"We have such an amazing crowd every year here in Budapest. I didn't expect that coming today. So when I went to that last run, I gave it absolutely everything. There was nothing left in it."
When asked about the journey to get back to the top, Hamilton responded:
"There's been ups and downs. It's a big rollercoaster ride, but none of us have lost faith. We're focusing on trying to steer the car into the direction.
"Today we were losing so much in turn four and eleven compared to the others. So I just sent it and hope that I stayed on track, but it has been tough and this is going to continue to be tough moving on from here. But I think hopefully this shows that we're on the right track and we can do it if we just keep pushing."
Hamilton was asked about how the different tyre compounds felt, the British driver responded:
"Yeah, big difference in balance. But all the tyres actually generally felt quite good. And right at the end, the soft tyre felt extraordinary and it's interesting how you have to prep the tyres.
"And for us finally having a relatively new, calm balance through the corners, is very difficult to get right with these type of cars. And I think we did that today. So hats off to the team. We did a great job."
Looking ahead to the race tomorrow, he continued:
"I just have to try and see if I can sleep tonight. I think tomorrow we'll study as hard as we can. We will bring our A game tomorrow as a team and it's gonna be difficult to fight these two guys . Lando [Norris] has been doing a mega job. It's been great to see McLaren out there battling. And Max [Verstappen], you know Max, he's always up there. He's always doing his thing."
