Angels GM Likes Starting 5 In Place, But Team Will Look To Upgrade

As the offseason gets going for the Los Angeles Angels, one of the biggest priorities for the team is building out their starting rotation. It has been a problem for this organization for years, and it seems that they finally want to address it.
The Angels have a few nice starters on the roster already, but they want to be aggressive in upgrading the rotation as well. They understand that to reach their goals of breaking the long playoff drought, they need to have solid pitchers in the rotation.
During an appearance on MLB Network Radio, general manager Perry Minasian explained the team's thinking on the rotation. He said that he likes who they have on the roster already, but that they would also look to upgrade.

He said they like the five starting pitchers they have (Detmers, Sandoval, Canning, Silseth, Anderson), but added:
“Is there a way to improve? Yes. Will we look at areas and ways to improve in those spots? Absolutely.”
This is a typical response from a general manager, and it helps keep things flexible for the Angels. There is a ton of great starting pitching available on the open market this winter, so the Angels could look there. But they aren't likely to dip their toes into the top-tier pitchers.
The Halos have never been shy about shelling out money to free agents, so maybe they do it once again this season. But with the team in a state of flux right now, it seems like that would be a poor idea.
They should look to bring in one or two veteran starters who could help some of the young guys during this transitional period. But the Angels also want to remain competitive, so they are caught in a weird situation.
Bringing in new manager Ron Washington should help with things, as players love his energy. They respond well to him, and that could see them have more of a chance to sign certain guys than if they hadn't hired him.
But Washington can only do so much to help the team win games, and the Angels have their work cut out for themselves. It will be a very crucial offseason for them, and one that they need to be careful with.
