Chase Silseth has been as reliable as they come in his last three appearances for the Padres.

The rookie, who has served as both a starter and reliever for the Angels this season, holds a 2.04 ERA in his last three starts, including a 1 ER, 4 K five-inning start against the talented Atlanta Braves.

"When anyone faces a lineup like that and does well against them, your confidence is going to go up pretty good," Silseth said. "That's one of the best lineups we've seen in a while."

It's no surprise that Angels manager Phil Nevin is happy to have a rookie who is heating up at the right time — especially considering the struggles of some of the Angels' other starting pitchers.

"He's somebody that's obviously gone to another level for us on the mound," Nevin said. "We're very excited about him."

Silseth has found success by sticking to his arsenal of a fastball, slider and splitter despite working on his cutter in the offseason. He knows that, despite his recent success, there are no easy games.

"In this game, you never have it figured out," Silseth said. "You never fully break through to where you can finally relax. You can't relax in this game because if you feel like that you've broken through, the game is going to humble you."

The Angels have been humbled since deciding against trading two-way star Shohei Ohtani, going 2-9 since the trade deadline. If Silseth can continue to put together winning performances, the Angels' desperate claw to the top of the AL Wild Card would be made all the easier.
