Angels News: Phil Nevin Might Not be the Right Man for the Job After Passive Rant Following Loss
There has been a lot of talk recently surrounding the future of the Los Angeles Angels. Nobody knows what will happen this offseason for the team, but there is a chance that they look very different next year.
Two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani could leave the team in free agency, there are rumors that star Mike Trout may ask out, and there may be major changes in the leadership personnel. Both General Manager Perry Minasian and manager Phil Nevin could see themselves looking for new jobs this winter.
It’s more likely that Nevin won’t return after the year, especially if the Angels want a fresh start. Prior to the team's loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Monday, Nevin had some very interesting comments regarding his players.
“I’m not angry with these guys,” Nevin said before the game. “No reason to be angry with them. I’ve said it all along, they come in and they prepare and practice and play to win. That hasn’t changed for me."

This comes off as very strange to me. The players are doing what they can out on the field, it just isn’t good enough to get them back into contention. Maybe the frustrations of the long year have finally caught up with Nevin
“It’s just where we’re at right now. You’re going to win some. You’re going to lose some. We’ve lost a little more than we’ve won.”

To me, this sounds like a guy who is checked out but wants to be professional in continuing to do the job that he was hired to do. The Angels have been out of playoff contention for the last month plus, and Nevin has known this due to their record.
“I’ve mentioned focus a couple of times, which with a young group with young players you have to stay on them about that part of it. There’s no part of this team that’s shown quit, shown lack of fire, a lack of intensity, a lack of anything."

The Angels do still have games to play, but they won’t mean anything in the grand scheme of things. This could be the last few weeks that Ohtani wears an Angels jersey, something that is surely on everyone in the organization's mind.
As the year winds down, the Angels find themselves out of the playoff picture once again. The team hasn’t reached the postseason since 2014, and they are going to have some tough choices to make as they enter into the offseason.
