Angels News: Phil Nevin Reacts to Continued Struggles for LHP Reid Detmers
Reid Detmers has proven that he can be a good starting pitcher to keep around. Last season, he held a 3.77 ERA across 25 starts and a 1.21 WHIP.
He had a slow start to the 2023 campaign, but began to warm up in June, in which he had a 2.05 ERA in five games started.
Unfortunately, the second half of the season has not been kind to the 24-year-old. Since the All-Star break, Detmers holds a 9.00 ERA and a 1-4 record. Needless to say, there is concern among the Angels staff.
In Friday's 11-3 loss to the Houston Astros — a team the Angels would love to beat considering their growing deficit in the AL Wild Card — Detmers only lasted 2.1 innings and gave up 7 hits and 7 ER.
"He just had trouble with his location today," said Angels manager Phil Nevin. "I thought that the stuff he had, looking at the scoreboard and shapes and the velo looked good. Then you watch the film and it''s kind of scattered around the zone."

Nevin expressed his concern for Detmers, and said that the young pitcher was taking the slump especially hard. However, he was firm in emphasizing his confidence that Detmers will return to form.
"This is hurting him," Nevin said. "It's bothering him. It hurts us too. A really talented young pitcher that's going to do great things for us for a long time that's in a little bit of a rut right now. You feel for him for that."

Detmers said that he wasn't sure why he is having difficulty with his control, saying that he has to fight through his struggles and keep evaluating ways to improve.
"Obviously, I've had rough times before," Detmers said. "It's not gonna be the last time. It's definitely frustrating. Just gotta get over this hump. I'm trying to get quick outs. Obviously, things just didn't go my way today."

Detmers is scheduled to make his next start Friday, Aug. 18 against the Tampa Bay Rays.
