Angels News: ZiPS Project Second Place Tie for Halos in AL West
The Angels have had a very impressive offseason thus far this winter. Their moves have caught the eyes of many, and has experts wondering if the team will finally end their eight-year postseason drought.
While they didn’t make a big splash, they drastically raised the floor of the team, and added depth all over the field and pitching staff. While some experts have shared their predictions for the Angels seasons, here we're going to be looking at the algorithms.
ZiPS projection system made projections for the entire 2023 season, and has the Angels finishing impressively high in what would be their best season since 2015. They project the Angels finish at 85-77, tied for second place in the crowded American League West.
"Names like Brandon Drury, Carlos Estévez, Hunter Renfroe, Gio Urshela, Tyler Anderson, Jake Lamb, and Justin Garza don’t exactly scream star power, but given the holes the Angels have, this roster might just actually be good enough to work in 2023."
This year is now or never for the Angels to have a winning season, so it’ll be interesting to see if their moves do enough to get there. According to ZiPS, the Halos would just miss out on the postseason, due only to losing the tiebreaker to the Seattle Mariners.
That would be as close as they’ve been to postseason baseball since 2015, and if one more game went their way, they’d be the final Wild Card team.
Angels general manager Perry Minasian said the team isn’t yet done upgrading the roster, so maybe those final moves will put them over the top and into playoff position.
