Angels Rumors: Could the Halos Sign This Former All-Star Catcher Before Opening Day?
The Angels technically don't have to make another move before Opening Day. Their roster is pretty good, and could definitely compete in the crowded American League West.
However, the Angels have some lofty expectations this season. With Shohei Ohtani's impending free agency, it's now or never for the Halos to win. We know Ohtani wants to play for a winner, and the Angels' chances of re-signing him would dramatically drop if they have another losing season.
So, where could the Angels look to upgrade?
The Angels definitely have a hole in the rotation, however, one big gap that no one is talking about is the catcher position. They don't have a ton of stability or "known value," and Angels insider Jeff Fletcher thinks they should target former All-Star Gary Sanchez before Opening Day.
"Gary Sanchez is still on the free agent market, and he has ties to Angels manager Phil Nevin from their days together with the New York Yankees. The Angels aren’t in position to guarantee Sanchez much in terms of money or playing time, but if he’s willing to accept a minor league deal and perhaps even start the season at Triple-A, it might make sense for the Angels."
Sanchez would be an instant upgrade, and would enter next season as the undisputed starter. While he's not exactly the two-time All-Star he once was, he still has hit 39 long balls over the last two seasons.
At his best, Sanchez was a 30-plus home run hitter, and would be a much more known commodity than Max Stassi, Matt Thaiss and Logan O'Hoppe.
He likely wouldn't cost very much, and would provide a lot more stability in the Halos' lineup.
