Entering the offseason, the Los Angeles Angels priority was upgrading their roster all over. They want to be aggressive in doing so, and it could lead them to spending some money.

One of their biggest issues comes from their starting rotation, and the team needs to focus on finding quality arms next season. They know that to be successful in this league, starting pitchers are some of the most important pieces to have.

MLB insider Andy McCullough of The Athletic put together a list of Black Friday signings for each MLB team and landed on a familiar pitcher for the Angels. Starter Frankie Montas missed the majority of the 2023 season due to arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder, but he could be an interesting option for the Halos.

"This feels like something the Angels might do. They could also still sign Shohei Ohtani. The franchise’s range of outcomes this winter is vast."

Per Andy McCullough of The Athletic

The Angels have to build out their pitching staff, and Montas could be a nice bounce back candidate. The Halos know him well from his time with the Oakland Athletics, and they know how dominant he can be.

He has spent the last year and a half with the New York Yankees but could be interested in coming back to California. Montas was great with Oakland before being traded to New York in 2022, posting an ERA of 3.18 over 19 appearances.

The right-hander is still only 30 years old, so he could sign a prove-it style contract with the Angels, to then re-enter free agency next season. He may want a player option on a second year, and the Halos would likely grant it if it wasn't too expensive.

It remains to be seen how exactly the Angels plan to build out their roster, but this could be a solid option. They need arms this winter, and Montas is in need of playing time to boost his value back up.
