At this point, everyone in the baseball industry is wondering the same thing: Will the Los Angeles Angels trade away two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani? With the trade deadline quickly approaching and the Angels continuing to fall down the standings and more out of the playoff picture, the questions have gotten louder.

The Angels would probably be better off trading Ohtani and getting something in return for him rather than keeping him and then having him leave in the winter for nothing. Many in the industry believe there is only a very slim chance for them to retain him so they may as well get something in return.

If they decided to trade Ohtani, it would bring them a king’s ransom in return that they could use to start building the team back up. However, one writer sees an Ohtani trade as possibly something else. Jim Bowden of The Athletic thinks that by trading Ohtani, it could help the team in the future but also show Ohtani in the offseason that if he rejoins them, things could be different due to the influx of talent.

"In fact, if they make the right trade, it might even help them re-sign Ohtani as a free agent because they’d be able to show him how much the team — and its future — has improved with the infusion of talent from the deal."

Per The Athletic

Bowden makes an interesting point but trading Ohtani could also damage the relationship. Additionally, the Angels would likely get back prospects in the deal and unless they then flipped those for more established talent, they would be in the same boat as before.

Either way, it's a different way of looking at things for the Angels and one route they could try to go. This entire situation is complicated and should be handled with delicacy. The team's future is at stake here and while they may not like it, trading Ohtani could be the one move they have that can help them get back to contention sooner rather than later.
