Who is the Favorite to Become Angels Next Manager, According to Oddsmakers?
With the Angels now in need of a new manager, all eyes point to who will potentially be the next Phil Nevin replacement. The team had another frustrating year, and their long postseason drought continues on.
Whoever takes over will be inheriting a franchise that hasn’t reached the playoffs since 2014, and they will be the fifth manager of the team since 2018. The turnover of managers within the organization has been shocking and is another reminder of the dysfunction that has plagued this franchise.
But someone needs to take the job, and someone will no matter how bad things look. According to BetOnline.ag, there are plenty of potential suitors for the Halos open position. You can check out all of the odds here!
Some of the guys with the best odds are in-house, including bench coach Ray Montgomery and infield coach Benji Gil. Montgomery has 4/1 odds and Gil has 5/1 odds to become the next manager of the Angels.
Both Montgomery and Gil make some sense for this team, as they know how the organization works, and how the players are. They wouldn’t be learning an entirely new organizational structure, and it could benefit the team for continuity sake.
Within the odds, there are some interesting names such as Mark DeRosa — who has experience managing star Mike Trout with Team USA — veteran Don Mattingly, former Giants manager Gabe Kapler and others. Another name who has also come up in recent reports is former Mets manager Buck Showalter — his odds are currently 20/1 on the sportsbook.
General Manager Perry Minasian said that the job was “attractive”, and that the team would take their time in hiring a new manager. But the Angels also would like to have a new leader before the height of free agency, otherwise, it could hurt their chances with some players.
No matter what happens with the Angels open manager role, the team needs to get this hire correct, otherwise, they will likely be back in this same situation shortly. This offseason will tell us a lot about where the Angels are going as a franchise, and they have a lot to answer for.
