WATCH: Braden Shewmake blasts walk-off home run
Shewmake lives the backyard dream
Braden Shewmake made the best of his last at-bat for the Gwinnett Stripers this evening. After a slow start, striking out his first four times up, Shewmake launched Jumbo Shrimps relief pitcher Garcia’s fastball for a game-winner to deep right:
Shewmake, who was just optioned down to the Braves Triple-A affiliate last week, absolutely crushed an 0-2 pitch with two on and two out in the bottom of the ninth to walk-off the Stripers to victory over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. Note that it was into the face of a strong wind and still was a no doubter. Final score Stripers 8, Jumbo Shrimp 5.
Here is a recap of Shemake's option to Gwinnett
After competing for the starting shortstop job in Atlanta, Grissom and Shewmake both were surprisingly optioned to Gwinnett with a week remaining in camp and the starting job was given to veteran Orlando Arcia, who promptly signed a multi-year contract extension.
The plan for both Grissom and Shewmake is to rotate starts in the middle infield. Grissom, who needs to work on his defense at shortstop, will start four times a week at short and twice a week at second base. (Minor League Baseball does not play on Mondays). Shewmake, who is seen as the better defender (and the most experienced at short, having played 197 of his career 206 minor league games there) will mostly play second base to acclimate to the position, in case he is needed as an injury replacement in Atlanta, but will get the remaining two starts a week at shortstop.
