Spencer Strider finishes 4th in NL Cy Young voting

Strider received six 2nd-place votes and nine 3rd-place votes

MLB has announced the votes for the 2023 National League Cy Young award, and Atlanta Braves starter Spencer Strider came in 4th place, receiving 64 points.

The winner was San Diego Padres starter Blake Snell, now a free agent. 

Strider received six 2nd-place votes and nine 3rd-place votes.

The Braves starter led all of baseball in wins (20), winning percentage (.800), strikeouts (281), and strikeout rate (13.5 K/9). Despite having the National League's best FIP (2.85), his ERA was at 3.86, which would have been the highest ERA of any Cy Young award winner in the history of the award. 

Why Spencer Strider wasn't a Cy Young finalist

Braves pitchers have won seven Cy Young awards in franchise history, the last by Tom Glavine in 1998. That victory was the end of a remarkable stretch of dominance from Atlanta's "Big Three", with John Smoltz winning in 1996, Greg Maddux winning three consecutive awards from 1993-1995, and Tom Glavine winning in 1991. Atlanta's first Cy Young went to Warren Spahn in 1957.   

Atlanta's come close recently - fellow starter Max Fried was the runner-up for the NL Cy Young just last year, receiving ten 2nd place votes and 72 points overall to Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara's 210 points.  

After manager Brian Snitker finished in third place for the NL Manager of the Year on Tuesday night, the Braves have one more shot at an 2023 award - Ronald Acuña Jr is the favorite for the NL Most Valuable Player award, presented tomorrow night at 6 PM ET on MLB Network.
