TRANSACTION: Braves send Allan Winans back to AAA Gwinnett, recall Jared Shuster

Atlanta's continuing to search for that 5th starter that can reliably take the ball between now and the postseason

The Atlanta Braves have officially sent last night's starter, Allan Winans, back to AAA Gwinnett, with starter Jared Shuster replacing him on the active roster

Winans, 28, was effective in his first two starts of the season against Milwaukee and the New York Mets on the road, but asking him to start against New York twice in a week turned out to be flying a bit too close to the sun.

Just one start removed from dominating them with seven innings of scoreless baseball with four hits and nine strikeouts, New York got the best of Winans last night. He took the loss, pitching 4.1 innings of nine hit, seven run ball with one walk and four strikeouts. They victimized him with the long ball, with both DJ Stewart and Rafael Orteaga taking him deep in the 2nd inning.

Replacing Winans on the roster is Jared Shuster. The 25 year-old lefthander is officially 4-2 on the season with an ERA of 5.00 in his nine starts, but none of those have come since late June. He's been in AAA Gwinnett for all of July and most of August, where he's 2-5 with a 7.32 ERA in his last eight starts. He's struck out 26 in those 39.1 innings, with 18 walks and 7 home runs allowed.

Atlanta keeps searching for that 5th starter after Yonny Chirinos hit the injured list with elbow soreness. Winans didn't work out last night and now Shuster gets a shot as Atlanta tries to wait on using Michael Soroka until after mid-September, for service time reasons
