Cardinals Nab Intriguing Young Speedster Off Waivers From NL Central Rival
The St. Louis Cardinals made a depth move Saturday.
The Cardinals certainly haven't had the season many expected them to have. St. Louis at one point was pegged as a possible 2023 World Series contender but instead, the club is in last place in the National League Central with a disappointing 58-78 record. Although the club has struggled this season, St. Louis still is busy and made a move Saturday by claiming former Cincinnati Reds outfielder Michael Siani off waivers, according to the club.
"(Outfielder) Michael Siani has been claimed off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds and optioned to Memphis (AAA)," the club said. "(Right-handed pitcher) Guillermo Zuñiga (right forearm strain) has been transferred to the 60-day (injured list)."
Siani hasn't gotten much time at the big league level yet, but he is an intriguing depth piece. He is just 24 years old and has impressed at the minor-league level. In 2022, Siani slashed .252/.345/.405 to go along with 14 home runs, 55 RBIs, and an eye-popping 52 stolen bases. The young outfielder has played in 108 games so far this season at the Triple-A level and has slashed .228/.344/.355 to go along with nine home runs, 47 RBIs, and 22 stolen bases.
It's unclear what role Siani will play with the Cardinals' big league club, but his speed certainly is interesting. If St. Louis could help improve his bat a little, he could be a solid weapon at the big league level with his speed alone. At this point, the Cardinals have turned their focus to the 2024 campaign. Maybe Siani will get a chance at the big league level at some point this season to see what he can do.
