Diamondbacks in the All Star Game, Past and Present

It's just the fourth time in franchise history the team has had four or more players selected to the All Star game

The Diamondbacks have sent four players to the  2023 All Star game to be played tonight at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. Game time is 5:00 P.M., PST

Diamondbacks selected to the 2023 All Star Roster

Two Arizona players will be starting in the game. Zac Gallen was named the starting pitcher by Phillies manager Rob Thomson. It will be Gallen's first All Star appearance. He is 11-3, with a 3.04 ERA. Gallen is known for his meticulous preparation, and dry sense of humor, but is always quick to praise his teammates and basks in the vibes of a good locker room.

Seattle native Corbin Carroll was voted in by the fans as a starter and will be in left field batting 8th. Carroll is batting  .289/.366/.589,  .915 OPS. He has 18 home runs and 26 stolen bases.  He is the current front runner for NL Rookie of the Year. Whenever he comes to the plate in a big situation at Chase Field chants of MVP rain down from the stands. He is already known as a humble but quiet leader in the clubhouse, always working hard to improve however he can.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr will be one of the NL outfield reserves and will be making his first all star appearance. The slugger is batting  .263/.316/.493 with 15 homers and 54 RBI, providing valuable run production from the right side, balancing the D-backs lineup.  Thanks to his upbeat and warm personality, Gurriel has become a clubhouse and fan favorite in a very short period of time.

Geraldo Perdomo was named as a late injury replacement at short stop. He was next in line based on player and coaches voting.  His All Star story is especially heartwarming as his mother had a dream about it just a few days before he was selected. The 23 year old native of the  Dominican Republic has made only two errors all year in 62 games, 54  of them at shortstop.  Leading the team in walks (37), OBP (.378), and pitches per plate appearances, Perdomo  was moved up from the bottom of the order to the leadoff spot several weeks ago.

Diamondbacks All Star History Since 1998

Previous Diamondbacks to start in the All Star game include Paul Goldschmidt (3), Randy Johnson (2), with Matt Williams, Jay Bell, Luis Gonzalez, Curt Schilling, and Ketel Marte getting starting honors one time each

Goldschmidt has the most selections, (6), followed by Gonzalez and Johnson with five.  Zack Greinke and Brandon Webb were both selected three times.  Patrick Corbin, Dan Haren, Miguel Montero, Justin Upton, and Schilling were selected two times each.

2023 will be the fourth time the D-backs have sent four or more players to the All Star game. In 2002 the team had six players in the game, as well as Manager Bob Brenly. Arizona also sent four players in 2017 and 1999.

The most hits in the All Star game by a Diamondback came in year one of the franchise (1998) from Devon White. He was the lone representative from Arizona in their maiden season and went 3-for-3 in a slugfest the AL won 13-8. Damian Miller had the only other multi hit game, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI in the infamous 7-7 tie in 2002.

Luis Gonzalez has the most All Star game hits in a career by a D-back, going 4-for-7  with an RBI in his five game appearances.

No D-back has ever homered in the All Star Game, but Luis Gonzalez won the Home Run Derby in 2001.  Chris Young was a participant in the derby in 2010.

In perhaps a fitting oddity, Johnson and Schilling had identical pitching lines in their respective starts in 2001 and 2002: 2 IP, 0 Runs, 1 Hit, 0 Walks, 3 K
