Could The Guardians Be A Contender To Trade For Pete Alonso?
Both the Cleveland Guardians and New York Mets failed to meet the expectations that were put on them prior to the season. The Guardians looked like they'd win back-to-back division titles and the Mets were a World Series contender when Spring Training began.
Now each team is at a crossroads that could end in a blockbuster trade going down.
Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported that several MLB executives believe All-Star first baseman Pete Alonso will be traded before next season starts. The Mets even talked with the Milwaukee Brewers about a trade before the deadline a month ago.
New York appears to be a team that is trying to retool while also staying competitive. The Guardians on the other hand are loaded with young talent and are ready to compete for a World Series while Jose Ramirez is still in his prime.
This makes a Guardians-Mets trade centered around Alonso compelling for everyone involved.
Alonso checks every box that Cleveland is missing in their lineup. He's a home run-hitting, right-handed power threat that teams can't pitch around. The 28-year-old does have a batting average of just .221 this season while also hitting 39 home runs with an OPS of .843.
Plugging the Polar Bear into the center of the lineup with Ramirez and Josh Naylor hitting around him would give opposing pitchers plenty of problems.
Cleveland could offer up a package centered around Shane Bieber and a handful of prospects the Mets have interest in. Bieber helps New York short term with their pitching depth while the prospects are a piece of the future.
Plus, the foundation for a trade may already be there with the two organizations recently pulling off another blockbuster trade with Francisco Lindor.
It's not a likely trade to go down based on how Cleveland's front office has operated in the past, but it's still an interesting hypothetical to think about.
