The Guardians Continue To Rely Heavily On Emmanuel Clase
It may be early in the second month of the season, but Emmanuel Clase is already getting plenty of work in as the Cleveland Guardians are turning to him once again late in games.
He's appeared in 16 of Cleveland's 30 games, tied for the most in the American League and MLB. His 15.1 innings pitched is also tied for 27th for innings listed among relievers this season.
Still, Clase has been just as effective on the mound as he was a year ago. He currently holds a 1.76 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP. Clase has also recorded 10 saves in 12 save opportunities, the most in the American League.
His velocity has taken a dip this season which may open some eyes. His cutter was consistently hitting 99.5 mph in 2022 but has hovered at 97.7 in 2023. Same story with the slider which was 91.9 mph last year but now sits a 90.4, per Baseball Savant.
This isn't something new for the defending AL Reliever of the Year. Clase led the league last season in games (77), games finished (67), and saves (47).
One natural reaction to all of this work for a pitcher who can easily hit triple digits is overworking him and risking injuries. It's definitely something to consider looking at the velocity drop.
However, if the Guardians are using Clase this much it would be shocking if they didn't stay in constant communication about his health.
When you have one of the best relievers and closers in baseball on your team, you have to use him.
