The Guardians Are Looking For A Spark
The MLB season is a long 162-game season that will inevitably have ups and down during parts of it. Sometimes you start hot as the Tampa Bay Rays have in 2023, and other times it's a slow takeoff. The season can feel like an eternity when a team isn't playing well.
The Cleveland Guardians got off to a decent start playing .500 baseball since Opening Day. All things considered, it could be a lot worse considering the carousel of pitchers coming in and out of the rotation because of injuries. However, the team knows that this core is capable of winning the AL Central so that is the expectation they've put on themselves.
So, of course, there's going to be frustration when they aren't living up to that.
Now they find themselves in a rut that seems impossible to break out of no matter what they do. Cleveland has a batting average of just .209 in the last seven days which surprisingly isn't the worst in baseball. That comes in at 21st in MLB with the Chicago White Sox in last with a .165.
As bad as much as they've struggled to get hits, all hope isn't lost. Cleveland has the third-fewest strikeouts in MLB so far this season with a K% of 18.2%. In some ways, this can definitely be encouraging. But it can also be disgruntling knowing that they're so close but just can get hits to drop.
It's pretty clear that this team needs some sort of spark to get everything going again. This spark could come in many different forms such as a prospect call-up, an offensive explosion, or perhaps even some warm weather that could boost morale.
As poorly as the Guardians have played over the last week, they haven't lost pave where it really matters. The Minnesota Twins started to slide two and Cleveland heads into Tuesday night's game against the Rockies just a game behind the Twins.
