Guardians Option Multiple High-Ranked Prospects To Triple-A

The Cleveland Guardians option George Valera and Joey Cantillo to Triple-A.
In this story:

Opening Day is rapidly approaching and the Cleveland Guardians roster for March 30 is already beginning to form.

On Friday, Cleveland informed Bo Naylor that he would be optioned to Triple-A and start 2023 in Columbus. Naylor isn't the only prospect that won't be on the Opening Day roster this season.

The Guardians made these moves on Sunday afternoon:

George Valera

The Guardians optioned their second overall prospect George Valera to Triple-A. This is another move that isn't shocking for a few reasons.

First, Cleveland has more outfielders than they know what to do with. They already have Steven Kwan, Myles Straw, Will Brennan, and Oscar Gonzalez on the roster and the reality is that Valera just wouldn't be able to get time in the field.

Second, Valera struggled with injuries in the Minors last season which have carried over to the Spring. It wouldn't make a ton of sense to have him make his MLB debut while still nursing his wrist.

Joey Cantillo

Cleveland also optioned LHP Joey Cantillo to Columbus as well. This move still doesn't come as a shock, but there was still a chance that Cantillo made the roster with the limited number of lefties the Guardians have.

Other Moves For The Guardians

Optioning Valera and Cantillo wasn't the only move that the Guardians made on Sunday. They also re-assigned pitching prospects Peyton Battenfield and Logan Allen (different Logan Allen than the one who was on their roster last season) to the Minor League camp.
