Dodgers Star Reportedly Among Possible Mets Free Agent Targets This Offseason
The New York Mets will be extremely busy this offseason.
New York didn't have the season it hoped to have and finished the 2023 campaign with an abysmal 75-87 record, good for fourth place in the National League East. This wasn't expected in the slightest after winning 101 games in 2022 but the club was unable to get on track seemingly at any point this season.
The Mets will be looking to reload the roster this offseason and need a right-handed power bat to provide depth. One player who could end up making sense as a target for the Mets is Los Angeles Angels star J.D. Martinez, according to SNY's Danny Abriano.
"I wanted the Mets to pursue Martinez or another (designated hitter) last offseason, but they instead went into the season with the duo of Daniel Vogelbach and Darin Ruf. That obviously didn't work out," Abriano said. "That means they'll again enter an offseason in need of a legitimate DH. And luckily for them, Martinez will again be a free agent.
"Martinez was an All-Star for the third straight season in 2023, slashing .272/.321/.572 with 33 homers and 27 doubles for the Dodgers."
Martinez would be a perfect fit for the Mets if he decided to leave Los Angeles. The six-time All-Star is no stranger to big markets and high expectations after playing for Los Angeles and with the Boston Red Sox and could help stabilize the club's offense. New York struggled at the designated hitter position at points throughout the 2023 season but Martinez could instantly give the club a boost.
