Mets Get Positive Update About Rising Young Slugger After Scare
The New York Mets may have struggled in 2023, but there were some bright spots.
One of the biggest bright spots for New York this season certainly was the play of rookie catcher Francisco Álvarez. The young backstop took over the role as the club's starting catcher and impressed. Álvarez finished the season with 25 home runs and 63 RBIs across 123 games played.
Although he was impressive, there was a slight scare after he left Sunday's season finale against the Philadelphia Phillies after taking a ball off of his heel. Mets fans can breathe a sigh of relief, though, as he reportedly is alright, according to The Athletic's Tim Britton.
"(For your information): Mets aren’t concerned about Francisco Álvarez, who left Sunday’s game after taking a ball off his heel," Britton said. "The catcher felt better on Monday."
New York is going to have a very interesting offseason that should lead to plenty of turnover within the organization, but Álvarez will play a major role in 2024. He impressed in his first stretch of extended play in the big league club and should be even better next season. There's plenty of room for growth -- namely getting on base -- but the young slugger should be a familiar face with the team for years to come.
Álvarez now will have a full offseason to get back on track and get ready for his sophomore season.
