The New York Mets have to decide who will lead the club into the future.

New York already has made one of the most difficult decisions by deciding who will lead the baseball operations department. The Mets recently hired former Milwaukee Brewers executive David Stearns as the club's president of baseball operations and he has plenty of work to do.

Former Mets manager Buck Showalter was let go by the club and the decision who manage the club next is a massive one. New York has been linked to Brewers Craig Counsell because of his obvious connection to Stearns and a reunion reportedly is becoming more likely, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.

"Folks around the game are starting to think the Mets have a reasonable chance to sign star managerial free agent Craig Counsell away from his hometown Brewers since he deferred extension talks in spring, and there’s no sign of progress yet," Heyman said. "Even so, someone connected to the Brewers said he believes Counsell will stay if he’s paid what he believes is fair. So it could go either way.

"One (National League) executive opined, 'If he was going to stay, they’d already have signed him,' but others aren’t so sure. Counsell is believed to be the only one of 30 managers who lives year-round in the city he manages, so there’s a definite home-field advantage for Milwaukee."

Counsell has had his name floated as a Mets possibility for months but it hasn't been clear if a move actually was a possibility. At points this season there were rumblings that Counsell could take the 2024 campaign off. There also have been plenty of rumors that he would return to the Brewers who have had plenty of success under him. If Counsell opts to leave Milwaukee and manage in 2024, he should be the top option for New York.

It's too early to tell if a move actually will happen but Mets fans should have some hope the club will land its top choice.
