Mets Superstar Reportedly Has Expressed Interest In Signing With New York Long-Term
The New York Mets will look different in 2024.
New York will be active this offseason as the club looks to rebound after a disastrous 2023 season. While it's expected the club will add to the roster this offseason, there also could be one major subtraction.
First baseman Pete Alonso is in line for a contract extension but it's unclear what will happen. Alonso has found his name in trade rumors lately and if the two sides can't agree he likely will be moved. Although this is the case, he has expressed interest in a long-term extension with New York, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.
"Alonso has expressed interest in hammering out a contract extension with the Mets," Passan said. "But he wants big money -- much bigger than the top first-base contracts doled out in recent years -- and, accordingly, the Mets are willing to listen to other teams. They are not chasing a trade. Unless contract talks fall apart, they're unlikely to pursue one. But if a motivated team approaches the Mets, new president of baseball operations David Stearns will hear them out."
The three-time All-Star has grown into one of the best sluggers in baseball since debuting with New York in 2019. He is a homegrown star and it would be devastating if New York moved on from him this offseason. He's sure to be expensive, but the Mets have the money to make a deal happen.
Although he still could be let go, it at least is a positive sign that he wants to remain with the club for the foreseeable future.
