What will the New York Mets do this offseason with superstar Pete Alonso?

He is one year away from free agency and there have been conflicting rumors about his future over the last year. Some have speculated that the two sides would come to terms on an extension and he would be with the club for the foreseeable future. Others have stated that the club would trade Alonso if a new contract wasn't agreed to.

At this point, there really is no way to be sure. But, Mets fans should have some hope at least be there reportedly is "no belief" the club will trade Alonso, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.

"There’s still no evidence the Mets will make a big move to lock up Pete Alonso now, but there’s no belief they intend to trade him, either," Heyman said.

While this latest news isn't a positive update on a possible contract extension, Heyman at least made it sound like Alonso will still be with New York on Opening Day in 2024. Although the Mets may not trade Alonso, there are reportedly a handful of teams that have interest in a possible move just in case, including the Chicago Cubs.

Alonso has been one of the best sluggers in baseball since making his big league debut in 2019. He is just 28 years old and already has three All-Star nods under his belt and has led the National League in both home runs and RBIs. If the Mets want to keep him for the future, they likely are going to have to break out the checkbook.
