Prior to the new MLB season, the San Diego Padres signed star third baseman Manny Machado to a massive contract extension. It was for 11 years and worth $350 million, as they wanted to keep him in San Diego long-term.

It was seen as a good move since Machado has been one of the more productive members of baseball for years. However, he has dealt with some nagging injuries this season, including a lingering elbow issue.

There has been talk about possibly shutting him down for the rest of the season, given where the Friars are in the standings. But so far, it hasn’t come to fruition, but he did miss the series finale on Wednesday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Manager Bob Melvin provided an update on their star infielder.

“It was a little bit sore today,” Melvin said. “Seems like it’s a couple games and then feels it a little bit. So we’ll see after the off day (today) what it looks like going forward. But for him to not be in the lineup means he’s feeling it.”

Machado wants to be out there with his guys. He is a competitor, and technically the Padres haven’t been eliminated from the postseason just yet. So he wants to play as long as he possibly can this season.

“I’m an athlete,” Machado said earlier this week. “We train for this all year. And you’re in this position, you just go out there and compete. No matter what it is, you just go out there and compete and whatever it is, you just leave it out there that day.”

On the year, Machado is hitting .252 with 28 home runs and 84 runs batted in. This year for him is seen as somewhat of a down year, considering the kind of seasons that he has produced in the past.

But this elbow injury has been hampering his play for quite some time now. He has seen multiple people to get opinions on the matter, and they have told him they are okay for him to keep playing despite any discomfort it may cause him.

“The Padres and Machado have sought several doctors’ opinions, and the parties are comfortable that playing will not make the injury worse. If Machado is shut down before the final game, it will be because the pain became intolerable.”

Per Kevin Acee of The SD Union-Tribune

It remains to be seen if Machado will end up finishing the season, especially if the Padres do get eliminated at some point soon. But this offseason will be a big time period for him to get that elbow corrected going forward.
