Orioles Pound Andrew Heaney, Give Texas Rangers First Losing Streak

The Baltimore Orioles drill two home runs off Texas Rangers starter Andrew Heaney.

ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers lost to the Baltimore Orioles 7-2 on Tuesday night at Globe Life Field.

The Rangers (3-2) started left-hander Andrew Heaney (0-1) for the first time this season and he was ineffective in throwing 69 pitches. He gave up seven hits, seven runs, two home runs and two walks, while only striking out two.

Heaney was one of three veteran pitchers the Rangers signed in the offseason.

The Orioles (3-2) got a three-run home run from Ryan Mountcastle and a two-run home run from Jorge Mateo to build a big lead after three innings. That was more than enough to stake former Rangers starter Kyle Gibson to his second straight win.

The Rangers may have better luck against Grayson Rodriguez, the Orioles' No. 1 pitching prospect, who will reportedly make his MLB debut on Wednesday in the series finale.

Texas has lost the first two games of the Orioles series, its first losing streak of 2023. First pitch for the third game is at 1:05 p.m. at Globe Life Field with Jacob deGrom expected to make his second start for Texas.

While Adolis García and Nathaniel Lowe hit solo home runs, the Rangers offense sputtered for a third straight game. Texas has seven hits and four runs in the past three games after piling 27 runs on Philadelphia Phillies in the first two games of the season.

Mountcastle drilled his second home run of the season in the second inning off  the right-filed foul pole. It landed in front of Rangers outfielder Robbie Grossman.

Adolis García got the Rangers on the board in the bottom of the second with a solo home run to center field. It was just the third run the Rangers scored in the last three games.

Meanwhile, it was a Jorge Mateo two-run home run in the top of the third that chased Heaney out of the game.

The Rangers added a run in the bottom of the sixth as Nathaniel Lowe hit a solo home run to the Orioles' bullpen in left field. It was Lowe's first home run of the season. But it only cut Baltimore's lead to 7-2.

Where Heaney stumbled, the Rangers bullpen excelled. Dane Dunning threw four innings of scoreless relief, giving up one hit and a walk. Taylor Hearn got Dunning out of a two-on jam in the seventh.

Hearn threw 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, giving the Rangers 18 straight innings of scoreless relief since Opening Day.
