Texas Rangers pitcher Jacob deGrom is headed to Florida for the birth of his child, throwing a bit of a delay in the current timetable for his return from injury.

deGrom left the team after Wednesday’s 3-2 loss to Detroit per multiple reports. deGrom was expected to throw a bullpen session before Wednesday’s game.

On Tuesday Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said that the team would evaluate deGrom’s progress after they returned from the road trip. The Rangers will be back at Globe Life Field on Friday to begin a three-game series with the Seattle Mariners.

With deGrom’s return to Florida, it’s believed he will return to the team either at the end of the upcoming weekend or early next week. At that point the Rangers will evaluate deGrom’s next step. That re-evaluation will include a new scan of his arm.

deGrom’s next step could be to throw another bullpen (he’s thrown four), throw to live batters in a practice situation, begin a rehab assignment with a Rangers affiliate or even work as an “opener” as he builds up his arm strength and pitch count.

The right-hander last started on April 29 against the New York Yankees, leaving after four innings. A subsequent MRI exam revealed right elbow inflammation.

The American League West-leading Rangers don’t have any reason to rush deGrom back. He’s already had a few minor injury scares since joining the club, including getting shut down early in Spring Training and leaving two starts early.
