Texas Rangers Ace Jacob deGrom Leaves Yankees Game in Fourth Inning
ARLINGTON, Texas — Texas Rangers starting pitcher Jacob deGrom left Friday’s game after giving up a hit to Willie Calhoun in the top of the fourth inning at Globe Life Field.
To that point, deGrom had thrown a no-hitter, retiring the first 10 New York Yankees he faced before allowing a walk to Anthony Rizzo. After Gleyber Torres flew out, Calhoun singled to left on deGrom’s 50th pitch.
After that, several Rangers players along with pitching coach Mike Maddux and the training staff went to the mound to join deGrom. After a few minutes of discussion, the decision was made by Texas manager Bruce Bochy to remove deGrom from the game.
The latest injury setback was labeled as right forearm tightness.
deGrom also left a game with wrist soreness on April 17 after four innings. He made his next scheduled start.
Dane Dunning replaced deGrom on Friday.
deGrom went 3 2/3 innings, giving up one hit, one walk and striking out two.
The Rangers were hoping that deGrom could end their four-game losing streak, and the Rangers were up 5-0 when he left the game. Texas won 5-2 and improved to 15-11.
Despite being credited with only two wins, the Rangers are 6-0 in games started by deGrom this season.
The series continues Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. Nathan Eovaldi (2-2, 5.20) gets the start for Texas, with Jhony Brito (2-2, 6.11) going for New York.
