Texas Rangers Ace Jacob deGrom Placed on Injured List
The Texas Rangers announced that ace pitcher Jacob deGrom, who left in the fourth inning of Friday’s 5-2 win over the New York Yankees, is headed to the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation.
He’ll be reevaluated in 7-10 days.
“We felt like it was prudent to build in a little extra rest for him and see how it responds over the coming days and then we'll get more information and go from there,” Rangers manager Chris Young said.
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy called deGrom’s exit “precautionary,” but additional testing took place Saturday, including an MRI exam.
Friday marked the second time in three starts that deGrom left early with an arm issue. On the road against Kansas City on April 17, he left after four no-hit innings with a wrist issue. Bochy said there was some similarity in what took deGrom out of Friday’s game.
“He’s disappointed because of the way he was throwing the ball (on Friday),” Bochy said. “Anyone would have been disappointed.”
The Rangers are playing it safe with deGrom, as Young said. And considering deGrom’s health history and trips to the injured list over the past few seasons with the New York Mets, Texas has no reason to push its prized free-agent signing.
When on the mound, the two-time Cy Young winner had been dominant. He has 45 strikeouts in 30 1/3 innings and a 2.67 ERA. Since giving up five earned runs on Open Day, deGrom has allowed only four earned runs in his last five outings. The Rangers are also 6-0 in deGrom starts.
The Rangers recalled right-hander Yerry Rodríguez from Triple-A Round Rock to take deGrom’s place on the roster.
deGrom threw 50 pitches and retired the first 10 Yankees before walking Anthony Rizzo. After Gleyber Torres flew out, Calhoun singled to left on deGrom’s final pitch.
deGrom’s next scheduled turn would have been Friday against the Los Angeles Angels.
The Rangers (15-11) and Yankees (15-12) play the third game of the series Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. Nathan Eovaldi (2-2, 5.20) starts for Texas with Jhony Brito (2-2, 6.11) going for New York.
