Texas Rangers Update Latest Jacob deGrom Injury

Texas Rangers ace Jacob deGrom was evaluated Saturday after leaving Friday's start early with right forearm tightness.

ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers continue to wait for an update on pitcher Jacob deGrom, who left in the fourth inning of Friday’s 5-2 win over the New York Yankees with right forearm tightness.

Rangers manager Bruce Bochy, who called deGrom’s exit as “precautionary,” didn’t have an update when he spoke to the media before Saturday’s game against the Yankees. At the time, deGrom was still being evaluated.

Rangers Today reported that deGrom underwent an MRI exam.

“We’ll just have to wait to hear what the doctors say,” Bochy said. “And we’ll find out if he needs time or not. Obviously, we’re being optimistic. Having gone through this with him a little bit already, obviously, until I hear from (the medical staff) that’s as much as I can say.”

This is the second time in three starts that deGrom left early with an arm issue. On the road against Kansas City on April 17, he left after four no-hit innings with a wrist issue. Bochy said there was some similarity in what took deGrom out of Friday’s game.

“He’s disappointed because of the way he was throwing the ball (on Friday),” Bochy said. “Anyone would have been disappointed.”

deGrom threw 50 pitches and retired the first 10 Yankees before walking Anthony Rizzo. After Gleyber Torres flew out, Calhoun singled to left on deGrom’s final pitch.

deGrom then summoned the Rangers training staff. After a few minutes of evaluation, deGrom left the game. He went 3 2/3 innings, giving up one hit, one walk and striking out two. Dane Dunning replaced deGrom and ended up getting the win in relief.

The Rangers have a schedule that could benefit deGrom if he needs time. The Rangers play the Yankees on Saturday and Sunday, then have an off-day. The Rangers host Arizona on Tuesday and Wednesday, and then have another off-day before starting a three-city, 10-game road trip to the west coast. deGrom’s next scheduled turn would be Friday against the Los Angeles Angels.

The Rangers (15-11) and Yankees (15-12) play the third game of the series Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. Nathan Eovaldi (2-2, 5.20) starts for Texas with Jhony Brito (2-2, 6.11) going for New York.
