Blue Jays Seen As Frontrunners To Land Rumored Red Sox Free Agent Target
It's starting to look like one of the Boston Red Sox's rumored free-agent targets is going to sign with one of the club's rivals.
Boston is looking to fill the designated hitter role still this offseason. The Red Sox had Justin Turner in the role last season and he was steady, but he is a free agent and doesn't seem like he's returning.
The Red Sox have made it known that they want to add a right-handed hitter who can help on defense and specifically has mentioned the outfield as an area of need.
Boston has been linked to All-Star slugger Jorge Soler on multiple occasions, but the Toronto Blue Jays currently are seen as the favorite to land him, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.
"The hitting market — Jorge Soler, J.D. Martinez, Justin Turner, and Rhys Hoskins — is heating up," Heyman said. "The Jays are a front-runner for Soler, with the (Arizona Diamondbacks) and Red Sox also interested."
Soler could be a solid option for Boston, but it's starting to seem like a move isn't a possibility. Boston reportedly is pursuing a reunion with slugger Adam Duvall which could be another sign that a deal with Soler isn't happening.
Toronto needs to add to the outfield this offseason and has been linked to a handful of players. The Blue Jays currently are seen as the favorite to land Soler but also have been linked to 2019 National League Most Valuable Player Cody Bellinger.
While it's unclear what Toronto will do, it does seem like Boston won't end up landing Soler.
