Ex-All-Star Pitcher Reportedly Available; Red Sox Could Target Hurler To Bolster Rotation
The Boston Red Sox could use another arm in the starting rotation right now.
Boston currently is fighting for a postseason spot but has seen its chances fall over the last few weeks as the club has hit a rough patch. The Red Sox's starting rotation has been one of the biggest reasons why. Boston starters have pitched at least five innings in just two of the club's last six games.
If the Red Sox are interested in adding another hurler into the mix, one player who could make sense is righty Lucas Giolito. The former All-Star reportedly was placed on waivers Tuesday night, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.
"BREAKING: The Los Angeles Angels have placed starter Lucas Giolito, relievers Matt Moore and Reynaldo López, and outfielders Hunter Renfroe and Randal Grichuk on waivers, sources tell ESPN," Passan said. "Huge potential playoff implications: All can be claimed by teams for free on Thursday."
Giolito has struggled since being acquired by the Los Angeles Angels but he still could be an intriguing acquisition for Boston. The righty has compiled a 6.89 ERA in six starts with Los Angeles but pitched to a 3.79 ERA with the Chicago White Sox in 21 starts before the trade deadline.
The 29-year-old is set to become a free agent at the end of the 2023 season. Boston likely will be in the market for at least one or two new starters this upcoming offseason. If the Red Sox could acquire someone like Giolito, they could get a close look at him ahead of free agency.
Los Angeles is in a precarious spot and shocked the baseball world Tuesday night, but the Angels' loss could be a gain for Boston.
