Pair Of Ex-Red Sox Sluggers Reportedly Being Pursued By NL West Club In Free Agency
It sounds like a pair of former Boston Red Sox sluggers are drawing some interest in free agency.
The Arizona Diamondbacks made a surprise run to the World Series last season and now are looking to improve the club and make another run next season. Arizona already has brought in former Red Sox pitcher Eduardo Rodríguez and now are looking to add another former member of the club.
Arizona is looking to improve its designated hitter position and reportedly is pursuing sluggers, J.D. Martinez and Justin Turner, according to USA Today Sports' Bob Nightengale.
"The Arizona Diamondbacks are hopeful of signing free-agent (designated hitter) J.D. Martinez now that the (Los Angeles Dodgers) no longer need him, with Justin Turner also in play," Nightengale said.
Martinez has been linked to the Diamondbacks on multiple occasions this offseason but has had an unclear offseason to this point. He spent the 2023 campaign with the Dodgers and it seemed like a possibility he could return, but only if they missed out on superstar Shohei Ohtani. That isn't the case, and now Martinez is looking for a new home.
Turner signed with the Red Sox as a free agent ahead of the 2023 season and he impressed. The 39-year-old was one of Boston's best offensive players and clubbed 23 home runs, drove in 96 runs, and slashed .276/.345/.455.
Both Turner and Martinez would make sense for the Diamondbacks and it wouldn't be surprising to see at least one of them land in the not-so-distant future now that Ohtani is off the market.
