The Boston Red Sox are at a crossroads.

After two straight seasons finishing in last place in the American League East, Boston needs to do something big this offseason if it wants to get back to the postseason. The Red Sox have said all of the right things so far and have been linked to seemingly every major star available in some way.

Boston has plenty of money to spend and the prospect capital needed to get a major trade done. Realistically, the Red Sox could make major splashes in free agency as well as the trade market. At this point, it's a little too early to know what the club's plans are, but it's clear that work needs to be done. Boston apparently knows this and is determined to do "something big" this offseason, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.

"They need to do something big," Heyman said. "People tell me Boston is bound and determined to do something big. Whether it’s (Shohei Ohtani), something else, they need to do something big."

This doesn't give much indication into what Boston's plans are but it's a positive sign that the Red Sox aren't going to be shy this offseason. The Red Sox desperately need to improve the starting rotation this offseason. Ohtani is an interesting option but wouldn't help the rotation until 2025. There are other players available like Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell, or Jordan Montgomery. It wouldn't hurt to add another right-handed bat to the middle of the lineup as well.

At this point, it's too early to tell what's going on, but it sounds like new chief baseball officer Craig Breslow is preparing to do something big.
