Red Sox Miss Out On Free Agent Target To Cubs Despite Showing Interest In Signing
The Boston Red Sox still are looking for a right-handed bat.
Boston lost veteran slugger Justin Turner this offseason and still is looking for a way to fill his shoes. Turner showed interest in returning to Boston, but the club seemingly wanted to go in a different direction.
It's unclear who the club will sign, but it does sound like the Red Sox at least are looking to find another right-handed bat soon. Boston has been linked to a handful of players -- including Adam Duvall -- but hasn't gotten a deal done yet.
One player who the Red Sox were linked to but no longer is an option now is former New York Yankees, Miami Marlins, and San Diego Padres first baseman Garett Cooper.
Cooper was mentioned as a fit for the Red Sox on multiple occasions and the club showed interest in him but missed out as the Chicago Cubs got a deal done, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.
The one-time All-Star is just 33 years old and could've helped Boston out. He has seen time at first base, left field, and right field throughout his seven-year big league career. He earned his lone All-Star nod in 2022 and followed it up with a solid 2023 campaign.
Last season he hit 17 home runs, drove in 61 runs, and slashed .251/.304/.419 across 123 total games played with the Marlins and Padres.
Boston finished as a finalist for Cooper but it seems like he preferred to go to Chicago instead. Luckily for the Red Sox, there still are options out there in free agency who could help them out.
