Red Sox Officially Add Infield Depth By Reuniting With Journeyman In Surprise Move
The Boston Red Sox may be done adding new infielders.
Boston officially moved infielder Trevor Story to the 60-day injured list to open up a roster spot and quickly filled it by re-signing infielder Yu Chang, according to the club.
Chang was claimed off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays by the Red Sox late in the 2022 season. The 27-year-old appeared in just 11 games for Boston in 2022 and in a small sample size slashed .150/.346/.250. Overall, Chang played for four different teams in 2022 alone.
The utility man began the 2022 season with the Cleveland Guardians and was designated for assignment after four games. He then was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates and appeared in 18 games before being designated for assignment again. The Rays claimed Chang off waivers from the Pirates and had his most successful stint with the club.
Chang slashed .260/.305/.385 in 36 games with the Rays to go along with three home runs and 12 RBIs before he was again designated for assignment. Boston then put in a waiver claim.
Boston now has Enrique Hernandez, Christian Arroyo, Adalberto Mondesi, and Chang as the middle infield depth heading into spring training. Hernandez likely will be the team's starting shortstop and Arroyo will begin as the team's everyday second baseman until Mondesi can return from injury. Chang likely pencils in as a depth option for the club behind the other three.
Rumors have swirled for months about the possibility of the team signing Jose Iglesias or Elvis Andrus but with the addition of Chang, this makes another move less likely. While it certainly shouldn't be ruled out, it sure appears as though Boston won't be making any more infield additions in the near future.
