Cincinnati Reds Non-Tender Three, Including Former Top Prospect Nick Senzel
The Cincinnati Reds announced Friday evening that they were non-tendering three players: Nick Senzel, Derek Law, and Reiver SanMartin. Senzel is not a huge surprise, but Law and SanMartin getting the boot means good things for the offseason.
The end of the Senzel era in Cincinnati feels like it’s been a foregone conclusion for awhile. The Reds demoted Senzel to Triple-A Louisville on Aug. 11 which felt like the harbinger for this moment. He did return to the major leagues shortly after, but even that felt like a lame duck tenure. He ends his Reds career having amassed negative Wins Above Replacement in five seasons. He played just a shade over 55% of the total games he could have since being called up.
Law and SanMartin being non-tendered shows the Reds seriousness about this offseason. With the moves the Reds need to make, having room on the 40-man roster is key. Law was a consistent contributor out of the bullpen while SanMartin dealt with injury for most of the 2023 season.
Law tossed 55 innings in 54 appearances with a 3.60 ERA. Law sported a below average strikeout rate and a worse than league average walk rate. He also was part of the problem for the bullpen in that his ground ball rate was under 40%.
SanMartin had a similar strikeout rate to Law and even worse walk rate. He did pitch in 14 appearances, which is more than you would have gotten me to guess. He underwent surgery to repair an ulnar collateral ligament injury on July 7th.
The Reds will look to fill the three empty 40-man roster spots with upgrades this offseason.
